Design of Electro-Technical Solutions and Systems for the Conductor Supported Platform of Filanovsky Field

    Caspian Sea, Astrakhan Region, Russia

Project Summary

Filanovsky Field is Russia’s largest oil field exploration project of the past 25 years and the second field brought online by Lukoil in the Caspian Sea. It produces an estimated 6 million tons of oil per year. Responsible for all Lukoil projects in the Caspian Sea, Volgogradnefteproekt, LLC provided detailed design services and technical support for an ice-resistant, stationary satellite platform that will adhere to a zero-discharge principle and monitor water bodies, subsoils, and contamination of natural environments and wildlife habitats. Located where sea depth varies almost 7 meters due to sea fluctuation, the platform will be operated autonomously via remote control and require a complicated series of communication lines and cables.

The project team was responsible for all engineering design and construction oversite. Volgogradnefteproekt relied on Bentley applications to create a detailed 3D model of the platform, including all communication lines and cables that would allow for remote operation. With an integrated BIM methodology, the project team also developed detailed design documentation and provided technical support for constructing the complicated cable system for the satellite platform. Team members could also easily view the design and share the model with other disciplines and the client, creating a unified project environment.

In April 2017, the project team completed the design and construction documents, and the project is currently in the construction phase. The team increased the speed of creating 3D models by 50 percent, when compared with a similar project, and reduced the time spent correcting errors by 40 percent. The team designed 5,000 units and laid 88,000 meters of cable. The first stages of the project were executed within a year and on schedule. When finished, the platform will increase accessibility to, and quality of, operation information. By being remotely operated, the platform will also limit the human factor in the future operation of the field, reducing risk of industrial disasters.

The team used Bentley Raceway and Cable Management to oversee the cable design and construction, as well as the other electrical equipment. The cable manager feature helped with routing and monitoring cables to provide the project stakeholders with access to all information, which resulted in a 70 percent time savings and reducing error risk. OpenPlant provided 3D modeling capabilities while AECOsim Building Designer helped with the architectural construction.
