Project Summary

The largest single infrastructure project in the Baltics, Rail Baltica is an 870-kilometer international passenger and freight railway corridor linking Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia as part of the European Union’s North Sea-Baltic Trans European Transport network. It will save billions in annual freight transport costs and EUR 7.1 billion in climate change costs, reducing carbon emissions to the lowest possible levels. Spanish company IDOM is designing 389 kilometers of the railway and faced challenges managing hundreds of companies and 150 multidiscipline, globally dispersed engineering professionals. To deliver this international megaproject, IDOM needed to implement 3D collaborative digital workflows.

They selected ProjectWise as the connected data platform and Bentley’s open BIM applications to perform collaborative 3D modeling and clash detection. Working in a visual, integrated digital environment streamlined multidiscipline workflows, enabling design changes to be carried out in real time. Adopting a comprehensive BIM methodology, IDOM achieved a 90% accuracy rate transitioning from design to construction, minimizing changes during construction and reaching a new level of quality and sustainability in infrastructure management.
